Rob Fleming Aquatic Center garners another design award
TRAPS Award
THE WOODLANDS, TEXAS (March 11, 2010) – The Southwest Region of the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) recently honored The Woodlands Township, The Woodlands Development Company and Clark Condon Associates with an award at the Texas Recreation and Park Society annual conference.

The Outstanding Park/Facility Design Award recognizes a park or facility project that displays a high degree of professional design quality. The Rob Fleming Aquatic Center, located in the Village of Creekside Park, was an initiative of The Woodlands Development Company and designed by Clark Condon and Associates. It opened to the public in 2008.

“The Park Planning Team that consists of members of The Woodlands Development Company and staff of The Woodlands Township’s Parks and Recreation Department reviewed all details of this facility which ranged from design concepts to operational plans,” said Parks and Recreation Director Chris Nunes. “This type of effort, I believe, lead this facility to receive this award.”

“We had high expectations of what the Rob Fleming Aquatic Center should be: from the initial vision and the incredible site, through programming, design, and construction,” said Joel Deretchin, Vice President of Public Affairs for The Woodlands Development Company. “This collaborative effort resulted in an incredible facility and user experience. The kid fun-o-meter is off the charts! This is a great asset not only to the residents of the Village of Creekside Park, but to the entire Woodlands community.”

“Our firm is honored to receive the design recognition from NRPA’s Southwest Region,” said Shelia Condon, CEO of Clark Condon Associates. “When we first saw the potential site, we knew it could be a landmark park for The Woodlands.”

Other companies that helped the Rob Fleming Aquatic Center become an award-winning facility include MCCM Architects, Spaw Glass and Water Technology, Inc.

The Woodlands Township seeks input for Google fiber optic trial location
THE WOODLANDS, TEXAS (March 8, 2010) – Google is planning to build and test ultra-high speed broadband networks at one or more trial locations that will utilize fiber-to-the-home connections to the Internet at more than one gigabit per second. They will offer service at a competitive price to at least 50,000 and upwards of 500,000 people. For a community to be considered as a test site, Google must receive nominations from residents and community groups, as well as a request for information (RFI) from the community’s local government.

The Woodlands Township has received considerable communication from local agencies and residents requesting that the Township submit a response. To help with this response, the Township has put a survey on its Web site, www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov, to get resident feedback about the Google fiber optic trial. The survey link, titled “GOOGLE SURVEY,” can be found on the left navigation panel of the main page.

The results of the survey will be included with the RFI that will be submitted to Google. The RFI will consist of questionnaires regarding community background information, collaboration on the Google Fiber Trial, community support, facilities and resources, construction methods and regulatory issues.

The Woodlands Township is asking residents to take part in the survey, which will remain on the Web site until Friday, March 26. The Township believes that the Google fiber optic trial would be a quality of life benefit for residents, as well as an economic development asset to the community.

Inaugural Watch Talk Wednesdays program well-received
NS and Law Enforcement
THE WOODLANDS, TEXAS (March 5, 2010) – About 100 residents attended the first program in the Watch Talk Wednesday series held recently at The Woodlands Township Service Center, 2201 Lake Woodlands Drive. The new program series is open to all residents of The Woodlands as an opportunity to learn about crime prevention and neighborhood safety tips.

“Community Policing is a team effort. It takes the community and police working together,” explained Township Neighborhood Services Manager John Raybon. The Watch Talk Wednesday series contributes to that goal.

Additional speakers at the inaugural program were Captain Andrew Eason of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Lt. Ronnie Glaze with Harris County Constable Precinct 4, Sgt. Jason Moore with Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and Steve Sumner, director of law enforcement and transportation services for The Woodlands Township.

Topics discussed were community-based policing and the release of information to the public, including tools such as WoodlandsAlert, a free service that allows participants to sign up to receive e-mail alerts on the information they choose. The Woodlands Watch neighborhood watch program uses WoodlandsAlert to disseminate information to its watch members. Often the Alert is used when the communication can help law enforcement.

“The WoodlandsAlert is not a news service and should not be considered as such, but rather we strive to release timely and correct information, especially when it affects the community at large, or can be used as a tool to help law enforcement,” said Mr. Sumner.

The next Watch Talk Wednesday is scheduled for Wednesday, March 24, from noon to 1 p.m., at the Montgomery County South Regional Library, 2101 Lake Robbins Drive. The topic will be Securing Your Home. Residents are welcome to bring a brown bag lunch.

For more information on Watch Talk Wednesdays and The Woodlands Watch program, please contact The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Services Department at neighbor@thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov. We are extremely grateful and appreciative of the efforts of Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell.”

Mrs. Mitchell, who was instrumental in giving The Woodlands its name, was a patron of the arts who envisioned The Woodlands as having a place where everyone, not just the elite, could enjoy symphonies, operas and ballets. The Tribute Concert to Cynthia Woods Mitchell is set for 7:30 p.m. on April 29, 2010. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. Before the concert, guests are invited to join the pre-concert activities in the plaza that include strolling artists, arts and crafts for children, an instrument petting zoo, side stage entertainment and more. Also taking place before the concert, from 5:30-6:45 p.m., is the Hats Off to Reading Celebration in the Event Tent. This area features face painting, hat making and bookmark crafts, as well as a free book for every child who stops by. Other celebratory activities honoring Cynthia Mitchell’s love of life and music will take place prior to the concert.

Mezzanine and lawn seating are free for the concert and tickets are not required for these areas. Lawn chairs are free and picnics are welcome, however beverages cannot be brought into the venue. Orchestra-level tickets are $15 and go on sale at noon on March 22, 2010. Tickets can be purchased at The Pavilion Ticket Office and all Ticketmaster outlets. Woodlands Community Garden expansion completed
Community Garden
THE WOODLANDS, TEXAS (March 2, 2010) – Thirty new plots have been opened at The Woodlands Community Garden, according to Lynne Aldrich, manager of the Environmental Services Department of The Woodlands Township, the group that oversees the operation.

The expansion almost doubled the size of the garden, she notes. The garden, located at Bear Branch Sports Field, now provides vegetable gardening opportunities for over 70 Woodlands residents.

“Some people have waited a year and a half for a gardening plot,” Ms. Aldrich said, adding, “all the new plots are already filled.”

Not only are the new plots filled, but a waiting list also exists. “We’ve got about 30 people waiting for a garden plot and the list grows every day,” she said.

According to a report issued by Garden Writers of America, home gardening is on the upswing. The report indicates that over 41 million Americans grew vegetable gardens in 2009. Of that group, over 7 million were new to gardening.

The report indicated that home gardening spanned age groups. The largest collection of gardeners were those between the ages of 35 and 44, who comprised 29 percent of gardeners. The second largest group were gardeners between the ages of 55 to 64, with those 65 and older comprising the third group of gardeners.

College grads made up the largest group of gardeners in the U.S., followed by persons with some college.

Unpredictably, people who made between $50,000 and $100,000 a year comprised the largest group of gardeners, with those making over $100,000 per year comprising the next level. Gardening was split pretty evenly between the sexes, with 53 percent female and 47 percent male.

“These national numbers show there is a great deal of interest in residential gardening, which is one of the reasons we have a waiting list here,” said Ms. Aldrich.

A similar study, released last year, indicated that 69 percent of the gardening population would spend less than $500 on their home garden, while 18 percent would spend between $500 and $1,500 on their garden. Six percent of gardeners plan to spend between $1,500 and $2,500.

Woodlands Township residents who would like to be placed on a waiting list for a community garden plot may call 281-210-3900.

Free nature lecture features bees
Kim Peoples Bacon
Kim Peoples Bacon, research scientist and founder of Texas Bee Watchers, based in Austin, reveals the fascinating world of native Texas bees and the appeal of gardening for pollinators at the free program.

According to Mrs. Bacon, bees are the number one animal pollinator of food crops, wildflowers and ornamental plants. Planting to attract pollinators is a growing trend in gardening. With moderate winters, The Woodlands area provides a home for bees almost year-round, she said.

Native bees are not well-known, Mrs. Bacon notes. “Unlike birds and butterflies, they are small, fast flyers and sometimes hard to see,” she said.

A group of citizen scientists, Texas Bee Watchers observe the activities of native bees, identify local species, note plants that attract them and develop pollinator gardens.

Mrs. Bacon shares her enthusiasm for native bees and bee-friendly gardens on Thursday, February 11, at 7:30 p.m. in the L.G.I. Lecture Hall at McCullough Jr. High School, 3800 S. Panther Creek Drive. A free program of The Woodlands Township, Walk in the Woods Lecture Series is sponsored by The Woodlands G.R.E.E.N., Hilton Garden Inn, Waste Management and The Pineywoods Nursery. Egrets and herons are returning to the neighborhood. In 2009, a colony, or rookery, grew to more than 100 nests with an estimated 500 birds. Noise and odor from droppings and fallen nestlings were a nuisance and posed a health concern.

As birds return, a combination of low-impact methods in a highly randomized pattern is being used to make the area undesirable for the birds to nest. Air horns, screamers, laser lights and water may be used to discourage nesting in the residential neighborhood. Some noise is unavoidable.

If birds lay eggs, dissuasion efforts must stop. Protected by the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act, nesting birds, their young, eggs and active nests cannot be disturbed in any way under penalty of law.

While it is hoped that the colony-nesters will choose a more appropriate site, no one can predict where the birds will go. Residents are encouraged to monitor their trees. Birds are most sensitive when seeking a new nesting site. Loud noise, light and motion encourage them to look elsewhere.
