THE WOODLANDS, TEXAS (December 20, 2013) – The Woodlands Township was recently honored with the prestigious Soccer Field of the Year award for Bear Branch Sports Field 7 by the Texas Turfgrass Association. Entries were judged based on their submitted photos and narrative description of the fields. Additionally, fields must be two years or older and under the continuous care of the entrant for at least two years.
Bear Branch Sports Fields, located at 5205 Research Forest Drive, was built in 1993 with assistance of a grant through the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Texas Local Parks, Recreation and Open Space Fund and USA Soccer. Bear Branch Sports Fields originally had six soccer fields, a concrete parking area, a covered pavilion and a small restroom facility. Expansion of the park in 1999 added a seventh field that included bleachers, field lights, a player bench area, a water-permeable parking area and a drinking fountain.
Field 7 was constructed with a sandy loam base and a subsurface drainage system to allow for quick removal of water from the playing surface. The playing surface was initially seeded with Sahara Bermuda. The irrigation system maximizes the efficient use of water for the turf. Included in the irrigation is the use of 28 full circle heads, 17 half circle heads and 10 zones which cover the playing surface and the turf adjacent to the field.
“The Woodlands Township Parks Operations Division takes great pride in having high quality turf. It is important for the field to be safe, playable and aesthetically pleasing for residents and park users,” said The Woodlands Township Parks and Recreation Director Chris Nunes. He attributes their overall success to well-planned, sound horticultural practices utilized by a devoted staff.
