Staying Safe While Camping Outdoors With cooler weather on the way and some indoor recreation activities still off limits during COVID-19, hiking and camping are safe alternatives to getting out of the house. Be safe by keeping your distance while traveling and camping (6 feet/2 meters). Remember to wear a face mask around others and have hand sanitizers with you. Since camping is outdoors and isolated, it is generally a low-risk activity. However, going in a group or sharing tents may increase the risk. Avoid crowded campgrounds, public restrooms and picnic areas.
