What does "sanctioned by USA Track and Field" mean?

USA Track & Field Sanction is a designation issued by USATF, through a local Association, which approves and licenses the holding of a competitive track and field, long distance running or race walking event in the United States. Only USTAF Sanctioned Events are eligible for National and World Records. Muddy Trails 5K follows all rules set forth by USATF for this type of running event.
