Blue Fox Vine Removal

The Woodlands Township soon will begin a Vine Removal Project in the area that runs from the entrance of the community, north of Blue Fox, along the eastern side of Grogan’s Mill Road. This area has been identified by the Township’s Certified Arborists as requiring significant vine management and reforestation efforts. Once the invasive vines are removed, contractors will plant 15- and 30-gallon trees to help replenish the forest. 

WHY DOES THE TOWNSHIP REMOVE VINES?

Nuisance vines pose unhealthy and potentially hazardous conditions for our trees, including:

• Higher Mortality: According to a study by the National Park Service, trees along the forest edge that are heavily covered in vines are more than twice as likely to die as those without vines.
• Sunlight Blockage: Uncontrolled vines can block sunlight from reaching the tree’s leaves, starving the tree of nutrients and stunting healthy growth.
• Airflow and Pests: The stalks of vines can block airflow to the leaves, branches and trunk, promoting the growth of fungi, bacteria and pests.
• Resource Competition: The aggressive root systems of large vines compete with the trees for water and nutrients, which becomes especially problematic during droughts.
• Structural Risk: Vines add extra weight to trees and can obscure hazardous defects, increasing the chance of the tree falling.
• Impact on New Growth: When vines blanket an entire area, they suppress the growth of new trees and understory, reducing the age diversity of that section of the forest, which in turn lowers the resilience of the ecosystem.
