The Woodlands Township is a special-purpose local government serving one of the most recognized master-planned communities in the United States. Located approximately 27 miles north of downtown Houston, The Woodlands was founded in 1974 by visionary oilman and developer George P. Mitchell. His idea was simple but bold: create a community where residents could live, work, play and learn in harmony with nature. Today, The Woodlands is home to more than 120,000 residents and over 2,100 businesses, including major corporate campuses, hospitals, retailers and restaurants. Known for its forested beauty and commitment to preserving green space, The Woodlands features 151 parks, 220 miles of hike and bike trails, a visitor destination and a thriving arts and cultural scene. The Woodlands Township plays a central role in the ongoing success and sustainability of the community. As a unique form of government, the Township provides municipal-level services such as:
Originally, these services were delivered by a patchwork of homeowner associations and special purpose districts. In 2010, The Woodlands Township was created to centralize and streamline local services while maintaining the community’s high standards and unique character. The Township is governed by a publicly elected Board of Directors and is funded through property taxes and sales tax revenues. George Mitchell’s legacy remains visible across the community. From the residential villages with their neighborhood parks and village centers to the vibrant Town Center and natural forest preserves, The Woodlands reflects a long-standing commitment to planning, innovation and environmental stewardship. Through the leadership of The Woodlands Township, that vision continues today.
