The Woodlands Township Independence Day Proclamation
Chairman Brad Bailey proudly proclaimed September 2, 2026, as The Woodlands Township Independence Day, recognizing a historic milestone that permanently eliminates the possibility of annexation by the City of Houston and secures the community's right to determine its own future.
The proclamation follows the unanimous approval of the Third Amendment to the Regional Participation Agreement by The Woodlands Township Board of Directors on August 26, 2026, and approval by Houston City Council on September 2, 2026. Beyond eliminating the threat of annexation, the agreement provides significant financial benefits. Beginning in 2030, the Township will retain an estimated $4.5 million annually in sales tax revenue previously paid to Houston, keeping those dollars in the community for the next 30 years.
This historic achievement honors George Mitchell's original vision and the generations of residents and leaders who have worked to preserve The Woodlands' unique identity for generations to come.
